I have a few hand me down pairs of shoes, but only ones that are worn with socks or that can be easily sanitized.

That's not ok even for babies, my mother taught me this when I was like 6 or 7 and I was dying to wear her shoes at home lol

No! It's definitely not hygienic. Not for babies, kids, grownups.... it's not hygienic for anybody.

I buy second hand cloaths but never shoes, it's not hygienic at all.

for me I don't think buying second hand shoes is hygienic even for babies.

I was always told not to use second hand shoes, because kids have changing feet and shoes "mold" to the first person which can cause issues for your child later on.
