INFORMATION FOR WOMEN ABOUT HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS (HPV) VACCINE DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING

What is the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine?

HPV vaccine is a shot that is given to prevent infection with human papilloma virus (HPV). There actually are a few versions of the HPV vaccine approved for clinical use. One version protects against HPV strains 16 and 18, (which together are responsible for 70 percent of the type of cervical cancer that invades the body). Another version also protects against HPV strains 16 and 18, plus two additional strains that cause warts on the vagina and vulva, whereas the newest HPV vaccine protects against nine HPV strains.
