INFORMATION FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE MITRAL VALVE DISEASE DURING PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING

What is mitral valve disease during pregnancy?

The mitral valve (also called the left atrioventricular valve and the bicuspid valve) is the valve that regulates blood flow from the left atrium of the heart to another heart chamber called the left ventricle. Problems can develop in any of the heart’s valves, but the mitral is the valve most often affected in women of childbearing age, particularly a condition called mitral stenosis (MS). This is a narrowing of the valve opening that results most often from the woman having suffered in the past from rheumatic fever, a complication that can result when an infection with group A Streptococcus, the bacteria that causes strep throat, is not treated early enough with antibiotics.
